Communications and Multimedia Forum appoints Kenny Ong as head of Astro Radio

The Communications and Multimedia Forum elected Kenny Ong, CEO of Astro Radio, as its new president. The appointment will see Ong (pictured) leading the post for a two-year term, succeeding outgoing chairman Khairul Anwar Salleh, CEO of Media Prima Television Networks.

As President, Ong will lead the board that will set the agenda for building a strong and agile self-regulatory framework for the communications and multimedia industry. Along with Board members, he is responsible for executing strategies to realize the vision of the Content Forum, which includes facilitating self-regulation and establishing the best practices necessary for the growth of the content industry and the protection of its consumers.

Ong joined Astro Radio earlier this year to oversee its strategic direction, in particular, its brands and talents, as well as to drive the growth of Radex. Ong also oversees Rocketfuel Entertainment, which leads talent-driven digital content on the Group’s platforms. He was previously MD in Malaysia and Head of Special Projects, South East Asia at Universal Music Group for over five years.

I look forward to not only maintaining, but also raising the bar for the good work that has been done by the Content Forum since its inception to govern content by self-regulation and help all of its organizations and members meet the goals and principles of the Content Code. , ” he said.

According to him, the recent growth of the industry has required a robust and dynamic approach to maintain the objective of the Content Forum while promoting self-regulation and adherence to the Content Code. Due to technological disruptions, Ong explained that the content industry in Malaysia has evolved dramatically over the past decade from a “one-way direction of information and content to what is now a network. extremely complex of content creators and distributors “.

“This makes regulation and oversight more difficult. Over the past 20 years, our industry, made up of various organizations, has proven to be adept at self-regulating content and managing a content code that balances creativity, innovation and healthy growth of the industry while protecting Malaysian culture, harmony and values, ”he said.

He added that the challenge now is to self-regulate and constantly update the content code that addresses a world of multiple complexities resulting from a new era of user-generated content such as piracy, fake news, online scams, cyberbullying, hate messages, e-commerce complaints, invasion of privacy and misleading information about products, services and platforms. At the same time, it is equally important to identify and help manage the emergence of new industries and players such as OTTs, live streaming platforms, esports and the proliferation of social media influencers. and KOLs.
