PINEHURST — High Point Central’s Davis DeLille took fourth individually after finishing in a four-way tie for first on Tuesday to crown the NCHSAA 3A Men’s Golf State Championship at No. 6 Pinehurst.

DeLille, an East Carolina rookie, shot a 74 on Monday to take second place at the halfway point and added a 75 on Tuesday for a total of 149 – tying Nick Norman of Forestview, Luke Mosley of JH Rose and Gavin Drose of Cape Fear. Mosley ultimately won the medal in the playoffs.

JH Rose captured the tag team title with a 312-304-616 on 17 shots over second-placed Terry Sanford. Making their first team appearance since 2005, the Bison – also featuring Ian White, Riley Johnson and Hunter Busick – totaled a team score of 357-361-718 to finish 12th.

SOUTHERN PINES — Bishop McGuinness finished seventh in the NCHSAA 1A Men’s Golf State Championship on Tuesday at Longleaf Golf and Family Club.

William Grissom shot an 84-93-177 to tie 24th individually and lead the Villains, who also featured Sam Sherrill, Ted Williams and Riggs Handy. Bishop finished with a team total of 388-391–779.

South Stanley won the team total with a 337-342–679, edging out Mitchell, who was trailing medalist Connor Warren (76-70–146), by two strokes.

PINEHURST – East Surry won the NCHSAA 2A Men’s Golf State Championship on Tuesday at Foxfire’s Red Fox Course.

East Surry went 328-326–654 to beat second place Midway, which was led by medalist Logan Atkins (76-72–148), by 11 shots.

Wheatmore’s Ryan Baynard is tied for 66th with a 92-94–186.

PINEHURST — Charlotte Catholic held on to win the NCHSAA 4A Men’s Golf State Championship on Tuesday at No. 8 Pinehurst.

Charlotte Catholic, who had an 11-stroke lead after Monday’s first round, went 306-315-621 to hold off Green Hope by three strokes. Charlotte Catholic’s Will Hartman picked up a five-stroke victory at 72-71–143.

Jack Boyer of Ragsdale is tied for 19th at 81-77-158, while Chase McLaughlin of Glenn is tied for 38th at 83-82–165 to highlight individuals in the region.

GREENSBORO — Three area golfers qualified Monday for next week’s NCISAA State Golf Championships.

Sean Finan and Cole Rouse of Wesleyan Christian qualified for the 4A Championship, while Jaxson Morgan of Westchester Country Day qualified for the 2A Championship. The four state championships will be held Monday at Champions Course in Bryan Park.

In Event 4A at Grandover’s East Course, Finan and Rouse each shot a 4 of 76 to tie for 11th individually. Wesleyan, who also had tally scores from Hunt Jardina (81) and Ethan Wooten (81), totaled 314 as a team to finish tied for sixth as Charlotte Country Day won the event with 299.

In Event 2A at Grandover’s West Course, Morgan shot a 2 of 74 to finish third, just behind a draw for the medalist. Westchester, which also had tally scores from Henry Erikson (94) and Jackson Hedrick (97), finished eighth with 265 while Caldwell won with 227.

In Event 3A at Cutter Creek in Snow Hill, High Point Christian finished sixth with a team score of 335. Cam Malbouef (79), Carter Medlin (83) Mason Mosier (85) and Cameron Crumper (88) had tally scores for the Cougars, who also got an individual score from Cam Walker (83). St. David’s won at 293.

State Championship qualifiers include: top three teams plus next five individuals for 2A, top three teams plus next six individuals for 3A, and top four teams plus next nine individuals for 4A.


KERNERSVILLE — Fourth-seeded Bishop McGuinness swept ninth-seeded East Wilkes 6-0 on Monday at Fourth of July Park in the third round of the NCHSAA 1A West Boys Doubles Tag Team Tennis Playoffs.

Luca Pestana, Josh Hanflink, Timothy Hackman, Evan Sturgill, Grant Wilson and Connor Whalen won in singles action for the Villains (15-1), who will host 10th-seeded Elkin in the Regional Championship today.


TROY — Oak Grove defeated Montgomery Central 3-0 in Women’s Mid-Piedmont Conference 3A football Monday at Montgomery Central.

Haley Long scored all three goals for the Grizzlies (7-9 overall, 5-4 in conference). Ella Blizard had an assist, while Ashlyn Grubb made a save in goal.

GREENSBORO — High Point Central fell 5-4 to Smith in Mid-State 3A Conference women’s football Monday at Smith.

Warner Vaughan scored four goals while Katie Harrison scored one to lead the Bison (5-11 overall, 5-5 in conference).

GREENSBORO – Southwest Guilford lost 2-1 to Northwest Guilford in Metro 4A Conference women’s soccer Monday at Northwest.

Lindsey Swift scored for the Cowgirls (12-10 overall, 6-7 in conference), while Laurel Collins was in goal.

TYRO – East Davidson fell 4-1 to West Davidson in Central Carolina 1A/2A Conference girls soccer Monday at West Davidson.

The Golden Eagles fell to 10-6-1 overall and 8-4 in the conference.

WALLBURG — Ledford lost 1-0 in overtime to Asheboro in Monday’s Mid-Piedmont Conference 3A women’s soccer game at Ledford.

The Panthers fell to 10-8-3 overall and 4-5 in the conference.

JAMESTOWN – Ragsdale outscored Western Guilford 5-1 in Metro 4A Conference Women’s Football on Monday in Ragsdale.

The Tigers improved to 12-7 overall and 7-6 in the conference.
